How to Make a Rainbow Cake

Rainbow cakes are all the rage right now. From Pinterest to Instagram everyone is posting pictures of these gorgeous cakes that are delicious to eat and amazing to look at. While they might look impossible to make at home, fear not because they’re actually super easy to make! All you need is some cake mix, two or three cake tins, and a little bit of food coloring.

Ingredients:
Any box mix of yellow cake will do. Make sure not to buy chocolate cake mix because you won’t be able to dye the batter.
2 or more cake tins. They should all be the same size. You can make the cake even if you only have one cake tin but the process will take a significantly longer time.
6 different shades of food coloring.
Parchment Paper to line the cake tin.
Butter-cream Frosting.

Process:
Begin by mixing the cake batter according to the directions given on the box. It usually requires you to add 2 eggs and some oil but the ingredients can vary based on the brand of the cake mix. If you want to make your own mix by scratch, that’s fine too!

Once your cake batter has been mixed, divide it into six separate bowls. Make sure that each of the bowls contains an equal amount of batter, otherwise it will affect the evenness of the cake.

Now it’s time to add food coloring to each of the six mixes. Choose colors that you love and that you think will go together nicely. Add in enough coloring so that you get your desired color.

Now line your tins with parchment paper and pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place each batter mix in a separate tin. If you only have two or three then you will have to bake the cake in batches.

Place the tins in the oven and bake for 5 – 10 minutes. Since the amount of batter in each tin is very small the baking time will not be long.

You can always check to see if your cake has been baked completely by sticking a toothpick into it and seeing if it comes out clean.

Once you have baked all six layers of the cake, let them cool completely for 30 – 40 minutes.

Now that your cakes have cooled it’s time to begin stacking them. Place a thin layer of butter-cream frosting between each layer until you have stacked all the pieces. Frost the cake completely and there you have it, your rainbow cake is ready to awe everyone who sees it!
